SPRINGFIELD, IL -
Cali Nolot played incredible against Illinois-Springfield, going 9-for-13 from the field and 3-for-4 from three to set a new career high with 25 points. She didn't just set a new career high, she also helped lead Wesleyan to a big 91-75 win over their foes from the GLVC.
Kentucky Wesleyan moves to 2-1 on the year while Illinois-Springfield drops to 0-3.
Kentucky Wesleyan jumped on the Prairie Stars early, as five points midway through the opening quarter from
Shiya Hoosier gave Wesleyan a 13-2 lead. Four different Panthers scored in the final four minutes of the quarter and Wesleyan led 26-6 after one. Defense was the key for the Panthers, as they forced two UIS turnovers to go along with a 25% shooting clip from the floor.
Wesleyan started the second quarter off strong, going up 28-13 thanks to an and-1 from Nolot and a layup from
Tahlia Walton. Illinois-Sprinfield cut it to nine midway through the frame, but two threes from
Mariah Edmonds and layups from Nolot and
Reeva Hammelman kept the home team at bay. KWC outscored UIS 14-5 over the final three minutes and went into the break leading 50-28.
After Wesleyan got their lead out to 32 in the third quarter, Illinois-Springfield attempted a comeback, getting it to as close as nine (81-72) with 59 seconds remaining in the game. Two clutch threes from Nolot and
Jordyn Barga would seal the win for the purple and white.
Wesleyan was extremely efficient in the game, going 35-60 (58.3%) from the field and 9-19 (47.4%) from three. UIS shot well, going 27-56 (48.2%) from the field and 13-30 (43.4%) from behind the arc, but their 17 turnovers led to 25 points for the Panthers.
Cali Nolot went 9-13 from the field and 3-4 from three en-route to a 25 point night. She also notched four rebounds, three assists, and didn't turn the ball over once in the game. Recent 1000 point scorer
Tahlia Walton also shot 9-13 from the field, scoring 20 points in the process.
Shaylee McDonald added 10 points while
Shiya Hoosier and
Reeva Hammelman chipped in nine. McDonald and
Hadley Lytton each dished out four assists while Nolot and
Corina Conley led with four rebounds.
The Panthers will have a chance to get back at another foe who took them down last year when they travel to St. Louis to take on the University of Missouri-St. Louis Tritons next week. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. CT on Monday, November 21.
