ST. LOUIS, MO - A late comeback wasn't enough for the Panthers on Monday, as they fell 60-52 to the University of Missouri-St. Louis Tritons. Down by as many as 17 at one point, Wesleyan clawed their way back to make it a five-point game with 28 seconds remaining before UMSL hit their free throws to seal the win.
UMSL moves to 1-3 on the year while Wesleyan falls to 2-2.Â
The teams went back-and-forth in the opening quarter, with Wesleyan leading 14-9 midway through the frame thanks to back-to-back three pointers from
Jordyn Barga and
Cali Nolot. The Tritons closed on a 9-0 run and led 18-14 at the end of one.
Missouri-St. Louis jumped on the Panthers early in the second quarter, extending their lead to nine two minutes into the frame. The Panthers battled back, and a
Shaylee McDonald layup in the final minute cut the Triton's lead to just 33-29 at the half.
The third quarter was the Panther's downfall, as they were outscored 19-8 in the frame. They managed to outscore their counterparts 15-8 in the fourth quarter, but the damage was too much to overcome.Â
Cali Nolot led the way with 15 points on 6-12 shooting, while
Corina Conley followed with 13.
Jordyn Barga tallied six rebounds, while
Shaylee McDonald dished out five assists.Â
Wesleyan struggled from the field, going just 21-59 (35.6%) overall and 6-28 (21.4%) from behind the arc. On the flip side, UMSLÂ went 24-49 (49%) from the field and a very solid 6-11 (54.5%) from three.Â
