Newson brace leads Panthers to win over Ohio Dominican

OWENSBORO, KY - The Kentucky Wesleyan Men's Soccer team kept their strong season going on Thursday night, taking down the Panthers of Ohio Dominican by a score of 3-1. This breaks a tie with KWC and ODU for sixth in the conference, as Wesleyan now jumps up to fourth place.

Wesleyan now moves to 7-3-2 (4-2-2 G-MAC) while Ohio Dominican falls to 3-5-3 (3-3-2 G-MAC).

Wesleyan got on the board early, with Calum Newson scoring just on a break off the assist from fellow English countryman Theo White just two minutes into the game. Newson then returned the favor in the 11th minute, passing the ball off to White who curled a shot in from just outside the 18-yard box to make it a 2-0 game. After the early barage by Wesleyan, Ohio Dominican controlled the rest of the half, forcing goalie Hannes Nilsson to make three saves in the frame. ODU would get one back in the 25th minute and Wesleyan went into the break up 2-1.

The second half saw the physicality pick up more, as there were seven yellow cards given in the final 45 minutes. With Wesleyan having coming close to extending their lead multiple times, Newson struck again in the 87th minute, taking a through ball from White and powering it past the visiting goalkeeper to seal the win for the good guys.

Calum Newson led with two goals and one assist, while Theo White tallied one goal and two assists. Newson now has 29 points (11g, 7a) on the year, while White is second on the team with 15 (5g, 5a).

Hannes Nilsson was incredible in goal, coming up with four huge saves on the night.

The Panthers will look to keep the momentum going on Saturday when they host the Walsh Cavaliers in a game that has big playoff implications. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. CT.
