OWENSBORO, Ky. - It was a heartbreaker Wednesday night in Owensboro. The Kentucky Wesleyan Men's Soccer team fought back to force overtime against Brescia, only to fall by way of penalty kick with just a minute and a half left in the game.
Brescia took control early in the game, scoring in the 13th minute on a solo goal by Joao Benassi-Silva. The Panthers kept knocking on the door, however, as
Jake Peveler and
Max Wawrin each put shots on frame in the final minutes of the opening half.
The second half saw both teams stay in the midfield as there were just eight combined shots in the first 35 minutes of the half. KWC's breakthrough came off the foot of
Brendan Wright, who sent an absolute rocket of a shot past the keeper to even the score up at one and notch the first goal of his KWC career. Neither team managed a goal in the final 10 minutes of regulation and the game was sent to a sudden-death overtime.
After an uneventful opening overtime period, the second overtime was a battle. The teams battled in the midfield before Brescia got on a breakaway and was awarded a penalty kick. Domenico Colletta put the PK away to give the Bearcats the win.Â
Brescia led in shots (26-14) while both teams were even in shots on goal (7). KWC was awarded nine corner kicks to Brescia's six, while Brescia committed 17 fouls to Wesleyan's 10.Â
Max Wawrin led the Panthers with five total shots, while
Zach Moore was awarded an assist on the Wright goal.
Freshman
Matthew Meyer made five saves in his first career start.
The KWC Men's Soccer team will be back in action on Thursday, Sept. 16, as they head down to Nasville to take on Trevecca Nazarene at 4:30 p.m.
