Panthers Fall in Home Opener

OWENSBORO, KY. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College volleyball team dropped a pair of matches during the opening day of the Kentucky Wesleyan College Invitational on Friday. A total of eight games were played inside Jones Gymnasium, featuring teams from across the Midwest and Central Region.
 
The Panthers (2-4) fell in straight sets in the opening match against Montevallo. The Falcons (4-2) stormed through the opening set 25-13. Montevallo held a .333 attacking percentage in the frame. It was a similar story in the second frame as they Falcons were near flawless committing two errors en route to a 25-12 victory.
 
Wesleyan battled back it the third set as they at one point trailed 10-5. After a kill by Nicole Martin the Panthers were within 14-12. Montevallo edged ahead by as many as five points, but the Panthers clawed back again, this time Karrah Cron's kill pulled Wesleyan within 17-15. However, the rally was halted and the Falcons won the third set 25-21.  
 
Diana Wesolosky finished with 10 kills on 22 attempts with three errors. Cron dished out 24 assists and collected 10 digs.
 
In the second match of the day, the Henderson State got the better of the Panthers in three contested sets. The opening set went back-and-forth and was knotted at 20 late after back-to-back kills from Lilly Trump and Martin. The Reddies (5-2) won five of the next six points to close out the opening set.
 
The Panthers also suffered a 25-21 loss in the second set. The Reddies erased the Panthers early lead with five straight points to take an 11-10 lead. The rally was nine of the last 10 as HSU built a cushion to withstand the Wesleyan late run. The Panthers fell in the final set 25-14.
 
Trump finished with 11 kills to lead the Panthers. Cron added 26 assists and seven digs. Maggie Vincent recorded nine digs in the match.
 
The Panthers will play two more matches on Saturday as the Kentucky Wesleyan Invitational continues. Wesleyan will face Missouri Southern State at 11 AM and conclude the event with a match-up against Maryville at 3 PM.
