Running Out of Innings

OWENSBORO, Ky. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College baseball team ran out of inning against Tiffin University on Saturday afternoon. The Dragons spoiled senior day with two narrow wins over the Panthers. As the universe will have it, Wesleyan and Tiffin will meet again in the first round of the Great Midwest Conference Tournament at Prasco Park on Wednesday.

GAME 1: TIFFIN 4, KWC 2
The Dragons (25-14, 20-12 GMAC) recorded a two-out RBI in the top of the first, but the Panthers (22-14, 19-9 GMAC) responded with a two-out hit of their own in the bottom half. Joseph Burke and Chase Andrews were in scoring position with two-outs when Brayden Sisson ripped a single into the gap in left, plating two runs.

Seth Wright had to pitch through several deep counts and in the top of the fourth inning, a two-run homerun over the left field fence by Griffin Stevens gave the Dragons a 3-2 lead. A second homerun by Stevens in the fifth increase the lead to 4-2. The Panthers had the tying run at the plate in the fifth, but could find another two-out hit.

Wright pitched four innings, allowing three runs on four hits with four strikeouts. Sisson was one for three with a double and two RBIs.

The Panthers were plagued by errors in the early innings of game two. Two errors aided in two runs scoring in the top of the first. Wesleyan cut into the 2-0 deficit in the bottom of the third as Ben Wilcoxson drove-in Robert Chayka.

It looked like the Dragons were going to make it a rout as they scored four in the fourth and five in the sixth to take a 11-1 lead. Things changed when Nate Cunningham came into finish off the sixth inning as he pitched 2.1 innings allowing just two hits with four strikeouts.

Cunningham's shut-down effort was rewarded with six runs by the Panther offense in the bottom of the seventh. As the first three batters were hit by pitches to lead-off the inning, Cody Bridges drove-in two runs with a single to center. Lane Kennemore doubled down the third base line to add another run. The line kept moving with Burke as he doubled to left, scoring two more runs.

Burke scored later in the frame on Sisson's one-out single, making the score 11-7. The Panthers went down in order in the eighth, but found more ways to get on base in the ninth. A lead-off single by Kennemore was followed by another double by Burke to put two runners in scoring position. Andrews followed with a sacrifice fly to pull Wesleyan within 11-8. After a ground-out the Panthers were down to their last out. Jaret Humphrey was down to his last strike when he clubbed a two-run homerun over the centerfield fence. Dalton Ney walked to keep the inning alive, but the Dragons got the final out to end the game.

Sisson finished four for five with two doubles, a stolen base, and one RBI. Bridges, Kennemore, and Burke each finished the game with two hits.

The Panthers will go into the Great Midwest Conference Tournament as the fourth seed and will play Tiffin again. Game time will be determined by the league office.
