High Drama at Prasco

MASON, Ohio – The Kentucky Wesleyan College baseball team faced off with Tiffin University for the fifth straight time on Wednesday afternoon. The Dragons won three of four at Panthers Park just four days ago, including the last two games. As Tiffin looked to win its third game in-a-row over Wesleyan, Devin Smith produced a dominating performance, pitching a complete game to earn a 3-1 win in the first round of the Great Midwest Conference Tournament.

The Dragons (25-15) produced a two-out hit in the top of the first to score their lone run of the game. Smith would only allow three more hits the rest of the way. Equally as impressive was Tyler Wehrle who defeated the Panthers (23-14) last week and also pitched a complete game on Wednesday.

Wehrle allowed just three baserunners through the first six innings and made the 1-0 lead stick. However, the Panthers found the spark that kick started the offense in the seventh. Ian Ellis clubbed his seventh homerun of the season to lead off the bottom half of the inning, tying the game in the process.

Bridges then stole second base. Wilcoxson scored on Lane Kennemore's ground-out. Wilcoxson originally held at third, but Bridges broke for third, causing a throw to second. With the attention on Bridges, Wilcoxson scored to give the Panthers a 3-1 lead.

Smith produced a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the ninth to advance the Panthers into Thursday's winner's bracket. Smith allowed just one run on four hits with 11 strikeouts. Ellis was two for four with a triple, homerun, and one RBI.

The Panthers will play the winner of Trevecca and Malone on Thursday afternoon. First pitch at Prasco Park is scheduled for 1:30 PM CT.
