Panthers Strike Fast in 3-2 Win at Walsh

NORTH CANTON, Ohio – The Kentucky Wesleyan College men's soccer team could only be slowed down by a lightning delay on Thursday night. The Panthers picked-up a 3-2 win and three points in the Great Midwest standings against Walsh at Milazzo Field. After a tame start, the match quickly turned into a shootout with its fair share of theatrics and dramatic moments.

After a 90-minute lightning delay, the Panthers (3-1-2 GMAC) took to the field. The Cavilers (2-4-1, 1-4 GMAC) took seven shots in the opening 45 minutes, three on goal. Lucas Daunhauer made all three saves as the match remained in a scoreless tie.

The two teams combined to take 11 shots in the opening half. Things opened-up offensively for both teams in the second half. A total of 19 shots were taken in the second period, 14 by Walsh, as all five goals were converted in the final 26 minutes.

luxas daunhauerJulian Gonzalez moved to the top of the GMAC standings with two goals in three minutes. Gonzalez scored the first goal of the match in the 63rd minute and gave Wesleyan 2-0 lead with another score in the 66th minute. Preston Wright aided in the second score.

The Cavs immediately showed more urgency in their attack, forcing the Panthers back on the defensive. In the 72 minute, Alex Jackson cut the Wesleyan lead in half with his lone goal of the match.

Walsh got sloppy in their own zone in the 76th minute as Max Wawrin took advantage of a deflection and with one touch he converted the Panthers' third goal into the top corner of the net. The goal stands as Wawrin's first of the season and turned into the game-winner.

The Cavs scored in the 83rd minute off a corner kick. A minute later Walsh looked to tie the game with a point-blank shot attempt, but Daunhauer was too fast and made the dramatic save to preserve the lead. Walsh had four more shots in the final two minutes, the final attempt came the closest as Jackson slipped on the wet turf and his attempt went over the crossbar.

Daunhauer made eight saves on the night to help the Panthers record their third win.

The Panthers will travel to Painesville, Ohio on Saturday for a match-up against Lake Erie. The match is scheduled to start at 2PM CT.
