Dominican Wins Mid Week Battle of the Panthers

COLUMBUS, Ohio- The Kentucky Wesleyan College baseball team wrapped up their quick trip to Marietta, Ohio on Tuesday. The Panthers dropped both games to their rival Panthers 5-7 and 2-4. Wesleyan is now 16-4 in conference play.

Game 1: ODU 7, KWC 5
Ohio Dominican was the first on the board scoring two runs in first inning. Ian Ellis struck back with a homerun to left field tying the game 2-2 in the second inning. Wesleyan managed to score another run in the fourth inning after Ellis, Brayden Sisson, and Jaret Humphrey all recorded singles.

With one out and two on base, Wesleyan threatened to tie the game but fell short on a fielder's choice from Puckett and a fly out from Wilcoxson. In the bottom of the fourth, Seth Wright came in to pitch for Benton McGill. Wright faced fourteen batters on the day, allowing two hits on two runs with three strikeouts.

The fifth and the sixth inning remained scoreless for both the Panther teams. Action started again in the top of the seventh with Puckett reaching on a wild pitch. Wilcoxson drove one up the middle to get Puckett into scoring position. Lane Kennemore grounded out to second, which allowed Puckett to score making the score 5-4. ODU extended their lead to 7-4 in the bottom of the seventh with a two-run homerun.

Wesleyan tried to battle back in the top of the eighth. Chase Andrews started the inning with a single to left field followed by a Sisson walked. Jaret Humphrey doubled to right center scoring Andrews and advancing Sisson to third. Humphrey finished the game with two hits and two RBIs.

Game 2: ODU 4, KWC 2
Ohio Dominican took an early lead with a two-run homerun in the top of the first. As the panthers tried to close the 2-0 gap, Dalton Ney walked to start the third inning. With a sacrifice bunt from Wilcoxson, Ney advanced to second. With Ney in scoring position, Kennemore singled to right center shortening the deficit 2-1. With Nolan Johnson going three up and three down, the Panthers were ready to tie the game in the fourth inning.

Ellis advanced to first on a walk and quickly moved to second by a sacrifice bunt from Sisson. With two outs and a runner on third, the next pitch hit Ney in the leg. A pitching change was made and helped Wesleyan score on a balk to tie the game.

With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, ODU managed to score two more runs. Ike Speiser shut the next batter down, leaving the final score 4-2.
Ellis recorded three hits with two RBI's on the day. Ellis and Ney both recorded two walks a piece along with one run each.

The Panthers will travel to Nashville on Friday to take on the Trojans.
