Panthers Control The Storm

PAINESVILLE, Ohio. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College football team put together its best performance of the spring on Sunday afternoon. The Panthers took down Lake Erie College 23-14 at Jack Britt Memorial Stadium.
 
The game started with the Panthers (1-4) in complete control as they held possession for 13 minutes and ran 25 plays to the Storms' two minutes and three plays. The defense forced a three and out late in the first frame and the Panthers took over on the LEC 22 yardline.  As the action moved into the second quarter, Chauncey Greer ran for a 10-yard touchdown to give Wesleyan a 7-0 lead.
 
The defense came-up with another big play in the second quarter as Kendrick Curry intercepted Lawrence Chambers' pass, giving the Panthers possession on their own 33-yard line. Wesleyan marched downfield in nine plays and less than five minutes to add to their lead.
 
Greer connected with Peyton Peters to get to the LEC 11-yardline. Jatorian Dillard took care of the rest on the next play with an 11-yard touchdown run. Right before the half, Curry picked-off another pass, stopping LEC on the Panthers' 42-yardline.
 
 alonzo danielThe Storm awakened in the third quarter taking the opening possession 63-yards for a touchdown, cutting the deficit in half, 14-7. The Panthers went three-and-out on their opening second half possession. LEC took advantage with another score, this time a six play, 22-yard drive.
 
Justin Smith missed a 32-yard field goal at the start of the fourth quarter that would have given the Storm the lead. The Panthers quickly turn momentum back in their favor as Jayden Freeman ran 68-yards down the near sideline for a touchdown and a 20-14 lead. The extra point was blocked.
 
On the ensuing kick-off the Storm produced a 39-yard return and took over the Panthers 36. Wesleyan forced a fumble on third down and started to chew clock. Still up one possession and over six minutes left in the game, the Panthers worked their way downfield. The eight-play drive resulted in a 37-yard field goal from Chris Mangold giving the Panthers a 23-14 lead with two minutes left in the game.
 
A high kick-off by Mangold was not recovered and the Panthers jumped on it and were able to run out the rest of the clock. Greer was 15 of 23 for 174 yards and one touchdown. He also ran for 42 yards and another touchdown. Landon Newman ran for 42 yards on 12 carries. Peters made five catches for 35 yards. Jalen Humphrey made 10 tackles, including 1.5 for a loss.
