VIENNA, WV - The Kentucky Wesleyan College volleyball team picked-up its first win of the season on Friday night. The Panthers won a thrilling five set match against Ohio Valley University. Ava Rebarchik highlighted the victory with 14 kills on the night, including the decisive blow that ended the match.
The Panthers (1-2 GMAC) raced out to a quick lead and after Karrah Cron's ace, Wesleyan doubled-up the Fighting Scots (0-5 GMAC) 18-9. The Panthers held a .310 hitting percentage in the opening set and took a 1-0 lead after a 25-20 win.
The Scots fell behind 2-0 after a loss in the second set. The attacking percentage remained at a high level for the Panthers in the second set, over .230. As the set was tied 8-8 the Panthers sprinted to a 15-10 lead which ended on Alexa Davis' kill. The cushion was plenty to take the second frame 25-18.
The comeback started in the third set for the Scots. OVU built a 16-8 lead early and never looked back, winning the set 25-20. The fourth set was tied at 10 before the Scots won eight of the next 11 points to take a 18-13 lead. The Panthers battled back and narrowed the deficit to 23-22 after a block by Rebarchik which forced a OVU timeout. However, a kill by the Scots brought set point and the frame ended on an error, 25-22.
In the final set the Panthers took a 9-4 lead before an error and back-to-back aces brought OVU back to within 9-7. In some thrilling rallies the Panthers kept the points alive and won the next five points. With the match in the balance the Scots won four straight before Rebarchik ended the night with a kill.
Rebarchik also recorded four total blocks and an ace. Cron added 11 kills, 18 assists, and 10 digs. Lilly Trump also notched 11kills and produced 13 digs. Carlee Widmer finished the match with 21 assists and six aces.
The Panthers will return home for a busy week. Wesleyan will host three matches, starting on Tuesday against Ohio Dominican at 2 PM.
