OWENSBORO, KY - In front of a crowd of nearly 1,700 local school children, the Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers dominated the College of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in St. Louis, going up 51-5 at halftime and winning the game by a final score of 104-29. Every player who touched the court for the Panthers scored.
The last time KWC allowed 29 points in a game was back in 1946 when the Panthers defeated Centre 83-29. The 75 point margin of victory is just short of the school record of 79 points set in a 127-48 win over Indiana Wesleyan back in 1997.
With the win the Panthers move to 6-5 (1-3 G-MAC) while the Eutectics fall to 4-7 (1-0 AMC).
KWC started out hot, working the ball around and hitting three of their first four shots to go up 8-0 two and a half minutes into the game.
JoMel Boyd then proceded to score seven straight points to extend the Wesleyan lead to 15-0. Thanks for buckets by
Wyatt Battaile and
Nathan Boyle, KWC would score 10 more points and go up 25-0 before UHSP was able to score their first points. Up 25-2 nine minutes into the contest, KWC didn't let up, going on 20-0 run over the next seven minutes before a Eutectic free throw made it 45-3 with 3:08 left in the half. A jumper by
Jamil Wilson and four straight points from
Keegan Brewer gave KWC a 51-5 lead heading into the break.
Boyd and Boyle combined to score the first 10 points of the second half for the Panthers. Up 63-8 four minutes into the frame,
Sasha Sukhanov scored seven of the next nine points for Wesleyan to extend their lead to 72-8. With 10:15 left in the ball game,
Cameron Frantz notched his first career points on a three pointer to make it an 80-12 game. A dunk by Sukhanov and a step back three pointer by Brewer at the end of the game gave KWC the 75-point victory.
Sasha Sukhanov poured in a career high 25 points in the win, followed by 15 from
JoMel Boyd and a career high 14 from
Keegan Brewer.
Antonio Thomas led the way in both rebounds (8) and assists (7).
KWC shot 38-67 (56.7%) for the game and 15-33 (45.5%) from behind the arc. They held UHSP to a mere 11-58 (19%) from the field and 4-30 (13.3%) from three. As much as they struggled shooting the ball, the Eutectics only turned the ball over 10 times in the loss, compared to nine turnovers for KWC. Wesleyan won the rebounding battle 58-22 and their 30 assists were six off the school record.
The Panthers will now have at two weeks off before they travel to Nashville, Tn. to take on Trevecca Nazarene on Thursday, December 30. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. CT.
