NASHVILLE, KY - In their final game of the 2021 calendar year, the Kentucky Wesleyan Men's Basketball took down the Trevecca Nazarene Trojans by a score of 84-64. KWC was paced by very even scoring, as they put six players in double-figures in the win.
With the win the Panthers move to 7-5 (2-3 G-MAC) while the Trojans fall to 3-9 (0-5 G-MAC).
Jordan Roland scored five straight points and
Wyatt Battaile hit a three to give the Panthers an 8-0 lead to start the game. TNU then went on a 17-7 run to go up 17-15 with 11:36 to go in the half. Just a few minutes later,
JoMel Boyd put in a monster dunk on a fast break to give KWC a 25-22 lead.
Jordan Roland hit two straight threes to extend KWC's lead to 39-28 with five minutes left in the frame. With 40 seconds left,
Jamil Wilson knocked in a jumper from the free throw line and Wesleyan took a 47-37 lead into the break.
Just like in the opening half, KWC started off hot. They used an 8-2 run capped off by a
Sasha Sukhanov three to go up 55-39 three and a half minutes into the final frame. Following a mini Trevecca run, Sukhanov scored five straight points to keep the Trojans at bay and give the Panthers a 61-46 lead with 13:46 left in the game. After a Wilson jump shot with 11:40 left, both teams went cold, going scoreless for nearly four minutes before Trevecca made a layup to cut the lead to 66-51. The Panthers ended their scoring drought with seven straight points off a Wilson jumper, Sukhanov three, and a Battaile layup to give them their largest lead of the game at 73-51 with 5:15 to go.
Nathan Boyle hit three shots from behind the arc in the final few minutes and KWC took the game by a 20-point margin.
Wyatt Battaile led the way for the Panthers with 17, followed by a strong 15 from
Sasha Sukhanov and 13 from
Jordan Roland. Battaile and Sukhanov each notched seven assists while Battaile and
Jamil Wilson each tallied four assists.
KWC shot well for the game, going 34-68 (50%) from the field and 13-31 (41.9%) from behind the arc. Trevecca shot 26-53 (49.1%) and 7-17 (41.2%) from three.
Despite being at a disadvantage for height, KWC outrebounded the Trojans 33-31. The Panthers forced 14 turnovers, while committing just seven of their own.
KWC will turn right around as they host Ohio Dominican at 2:15 p.m. on Saturday.
