Panthers Fall in Five to Arrows

PEPPER PIKE, Ohio – The Kentucky Wesleyan College volleyball team lost a thriller on Saturday afternoon in the Buckeye State. The Panthers continued their Great Midwest Athletic Conference slate at Ursuline University. The Arrows defend their home court by taking the match in five sets.

The Arrows (5-12, 4-5 GMAC) took a 1-0 lead after taking the opening set 25-18. The Panthers, (2-18, 0-9 GMAC) despite trailing 7-3 in the onset of the second stanza, battled back to a 10-10 tie. Wesleyan eventually took its first lead (13-12) in the set after Diana Wesolosky's kill.

Ursuline rebounded with a rally to take a 20-17 lead, but the Panthers won six of the next eight points, including back-to-back-to-back kills from Lilly Trump, Nicole Martin, and Wesolosky. The Panthers won the second set 25-23 after winning the final two points, evening the match.

The Panthers held an attacking percentage of .212 in the third set and dominated the Arrows. Wesleyan raced out to a 16-7 lead and never looked back, taking the third set 25-12. The momentum continued into the fourth set as the Panthers opened the frame on a 5-0 run. The Arrows came all the way back and eventually tied the set at 8-8 before taking a 12-8 lead.

The Arrows run continued by taking eight out of the next 10 points. The cushion was just big enough to fight off a late Panther rally as Ursuline tied the match with a 25-22 win of the fourth set.

Martin gave the Panthers a 12-10 lead in the decisive set with a kill, but the Arrows won the next three points to take the lead. After the Panthers tied the set at 13, Ursuline won the final two points to end the match, 15-13.

Martin finished with 17 kills while Wesolosky added 13 kills. Ava Rebarchik hit .320 and recorded 12 kills. Karrah Cron dished out 28 assists while Maggie Vincent finished with 20 digs and six assists.

The Panthers will travel to Hammond, Indiana on Friday for the largest volleyball tournament in the nation, the Midwest Region Crossover. The Panthers will play a series of games at the Hammond Sportsplex and Community Center.
