OWENSBORO, KY. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College women's soccer team fought the rain and Cedarville University on Saturday night. The Panthers suffered a 2-0 loss to the Yellow Jackets at Panther Field.
With a slick turf under their feet and rain falling on their heads, the Panthers (3-11, 0-10 GMAC) looked to provide the energy at the start of the match. The Yellow Jackets (9-4-2, 9-2-1 GMAC) countered with a methodical, possession style of offense to slow the pace of the match on the wet turf.
Reegan Garrity was up to task as she made four saves in the first 13 minutes. However, the Yellow Jackets broke through shortly thereafter on a corner kick. As the serve from the corner got into the Panthers' box, Mary Kate Wyer collided with the ball and forced the ball into the top of the net.
The Panthers had chances to tie the match in the 26
th minute as
Chloe Hinchcliffe's shot was saved. Again, in the 39
th minute,
Natalie Hinchcliffe's game-tying attempt was blocked by the Cedarville defense. The Panthers went into intermission trailing 1-0. They took five shots in the first 45 minutes, three being on goal.
Cedarville found a spark at the start of the second period as they continually applied pressure on the Panthers' goal. In the 54
th minute Lisi Williams shot hit the cross bar and bounded straight down for Addie Erslan who ran through the ball to put it into the back of the net.
The control style of Cedarville made it difficult to absorb in the final 35 minutes. The Yellow Jackets kept their 2-0 lead until the end of the match. The Panthers finished with eight shots, four on goal.
Chloe Hinchcliffe finished with three shots, one on goal. Garrity made 13 saves on the night.
The Panthers will be in Canton, Ohio on Thursday for a match against Malone. The match is scheduled to start at 3:30 PM CT.
