OWENSBORO, Ky. – For the first time in 30 years, Kentucky Wesleyan College is represented on the CoSIDA Academic All-District Baseball team. Starting pitcher Devin Smith was named to the District 4 First Team for the first time in his career.
Smith carries a 3.70 GPA while majoring in Business Administration with an emphasis in Human Resources. He has been named to the D2ADA Academic Achievement Award, G-MAC All-Academic team, President's List and Dean's List since transferring to Wesleyan prior to the 2019 season.
The 2019 G-MAC Pitcher of the Year and First-Team All-G-MAC honoree earned three separate All-Region selections plus NCBWA All-American honors last season. He was the first pitcher in program history to earn All-America honors. He went unbeaten on the year with an 8-0 record in 11 starts. The then junior led the conference in strikeouts, earned run average, opponents batting average and hits allowed. His 1.74 ERA ranked 15th in the nation.
In 16 career starts at Wesleyan, Smith holds a 10-1 record with three complete games and two shutouts. In 89 innings of work, he has racked up 106 strikeouts while holding opponents to 70 hits and 27 runs.
The Teutopolis, Ill. native has four career games with 10+ strikeouts. He struck out a career high 13 against Malone who was regionally-ranked at the time in May of 2019.
This marks the programs second CoSIDA All-District selection. Outfielder Ryan Lemond earned the honor in 1989.
Smith is one of three selections from the Great Midwest Athletic Conference along with Eric Mullet (Malone) and Payton Eeles (Cedarville). All three student athletes advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America ballot. The Academic All-America honorees will be announced from June 8-11 by Division.
To be eligible for nomination to the Google Cloud Academic All-District Team, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore in academic standing with at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA, and must be a starter or an important reserve.
- Note: Due to COVID-19, the 2020 ballot held career statistics instead of single season statistics.
