WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College softball team suffered two defeats on Tuesday morning as their annual Spring Break trip to the Sunshine State continued. The Panthers lost in the late inning to Mercyhurst 3-2 before falling to perennial power Grand Valley State 3-0 in the day's finale.
Game 1 : Mercyhurst – 3, KWC – 2
A solo homerun in the bottom of the second inning was the lone run for the Lakers (3-6) through the first four innings. The Panthers (4-11) took the lead in the top of the fourth inning with a pair of runs. With two outs and runners on second and third,
Andee Powell tied the game with a single through the left side of the diamond.
Michaela Polivick followed with another single through the middle, plating the Panthers' second run of the game.
Bailey Woodall struck-out five in the first three innings and ended the game with six Ks. The Panthers left two runners on in the top of the fifth and it proved to be costly. In the bottom half a one-out run scoring double tied the game and an RBI single gave the Lakers the lead.
The Panthers went quickly in the sixth, but put two runners on with no outs in the seventh. However, the Lakers pitched out the jam to secure the victory.
Game 2: Grand Valley – 3, KWC – 0
Evyn Hendrickson pitched a complete game in the day's finale, but the Lakers (5-3) shut-out Wesleyan. Hendrickson allowed three runs on nine hits with six strikeouts. Grand Valley scored twice in the second inning and added an insurance run in the fifth. The Panthers played solid defense as the Lakers stranded 11 runners on base.
The Panthers will back on the diamond on Wednesday with two more games. First pitch agains Saint Anselm is scheduled for 9 AM CT with an afternoon match-up against Felician scheduled to start at 11:15 AM CT.
