Burke Garners NCBWA Regional Hitter of the Week

DALLAS, Texas - Joseph Burke of the Kentucky Wesleyan College baseball team has been named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II Midwest Region Hitter of the Week as announced by the NCBWA on Thursday.  This is the program's first NCBWA Player of the Week honors since Matt Pobereyko was named NCBWA Midwest Region Pitcher of the Week in April 2015.

The Panthers went a perfect 5-0 last week during their trip to Florida including a late-inning rally to upset No. 28 Florida Southern.

Burke went 8-for-19 on the week with nine RBI's and eight runs scored.  Burke blasted four home runs in the five games including three against Florida Southern.

In Wednesday's match up with the Mocs, Burke went yard three times, tying his own Kentucky Wesleyan and G-MAC record for home runs in a game.  On the day, he finished 4-for-5 at the plate with six RBIs.

Burke's final home run came in an 8-1 win over Saginaw Valley on Saturday.  The senior recorded a hit in all five games last week and has a hit in 11 of the 12 games this season.

On the year, Burke is team-high .415 with six home runs and 15 RBI's.  He became the conference's all-time leader in home runs last season with 37. He now sits at 43.

The Panthers open G-MAC play this weekend, traveling to Viena, W. Va. to take on Ohio Valley.  The four-game series was originally schedule for Friday-Saturday, but has been postponed Sunday-Monday due to forecasted weather.
