Panthers Fall in Home Opener

OWENSBORO, KY. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College softball team suffered a pair of losses on Saturday in the Blue Bridge Classic. The Panthers hosted four games on Saturday replacing the canceled Music City Classic that was originally scheduled in Nashville this weekend. Wesleyan fell 3-1 to No. 12 Indianapolis before Rockhurst defeated the Panthers 8-0 in five innings.

GAME ONE: No. 12 UIndy 3, KWC 1
Evyn Hendrickson pitched a complete game in the day's opener, but suffered a 3-1 loss to the Greyhounds (4-1). Hendrickson allowed three runs on nine hits with six strikeouts.

The Panthers (0-6) got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning as Abbey Winstead led-off with a single. Madison Scott followed with a two-strike single and both runners advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch. Andee Powell drove in the first run of the game with a ground-out.

Wesleyan took the lead into the fifth innings, but Hounds tied the game with a run in the top half of the frame. They added another tally in the top of the sixth and an insurance run in the seventh. Heads-up base-running in the seventh allowed UIndy to score with a runner on first as s sac bunt allowed Giovanni Iannanton to get to third as she never slowed down rounding second.

GAME TWO: KWC 0, Rockhurst 8
Rockhurst produced two big innings in the night-cap as they scored five times in the second inning. An error prolonged the frame as all the runs came-in with two outs. The Hawks (1-1) added three more runs in the third and shut-out the Panthers the rest of the way to win 8-0. Wesleyan looked to answer in the third inning, but left the bases loaded.

The Panthers will play two more games tomorrow with a rematch against Rockhurst. First pitch at Foster Field is scheduled for 10 AM. Wesleyan will take on Indianapolis at 4 PM.
