Opening Day in Tigerville; Panthers Fall to No. 8 North Greenville

TIGERVILLE, S.C. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College baseball team opened their 2020 campaign on Friday, suffering a pair of losses to nationally-ranked North Greenville University.

Game 1: KWC 4 – No. 8 NGU 8
The Panthers erased a two-run deficit to tie the game at four in the eighth but the Crusaders responded with four runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Ian Ellis drove in the first run of the season for the Panthers with a double to left field, scoring Brayden Sisson.  Facing a 3-1 deficit, Chase Andrews led off the top of the seventh with a home run to left for Wesleyan's first blast of the new season.

North Greenville extended their lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh before the Panthers put a spark in the offense in the top of the eighth.  Reece Puckett led off with a walk before Cody Bridges and Lane Kennemore recorded base hits to load the bases with no outs.  Back-to-back sacrifice flies from Joseph Burke and Sisson evened the game at four.

The Crusaders regained the lead in the bottom of the eight with four runs including a three-run home run.

Kennemore and Burke both recorded a pair of hits in game one while four Panthers recorded one RBI.

Reigning G-MAC Pitcher of the Year Devin Smith took a no-decision, throwing 3.2 innings with five hits, two runs and two strikeouts.  Cam Chapman took the loss, going 1.1 innings with three runs off of one hit and one walk.

Game 2: KWC 2 – No. 8 NGU 9 (7 innings)
Benton McGill threw the best game of his career in game two, striking out 10 batters in just 4.0 innings of work.  All three outs in both the second and fourth innings came on strikeouts.  The sophomore took a no decision, giving up two runs off of four hits in the 4.0 innings.

The game was tied up at two after the second inning.  Burke recorded a RBI single in the top of the first while Ben Wilcoxson tabbed a RBI groundout in the second.

Neither team was able to plate a run over the next three innings until the Crusaders broke it open with seven runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Ike Speiser took the loss in game two, throwing 1.1 innings and giving up three runs off three hits while striking out three.

The Panthers and Crusaders will wrap up the series with a nine-inning game on Saturday.  First pitch is set for 12 pm CT.
