Golden Victory

OWENSBORO, KY. - On a crisp fall evening, the Kentucky Wesleyan College men's soccer team turned-up golden. Wesleyan won its first Great Midwest match of the season over Ohio Dominican on Ben Protheroe's goal, 10 seconds into overtime. The Panthers led for a majority of the match to only be tied on a late penalty kick. Neverthelesss, Wesleyan emerged with a 3-2 victory. 

Ohio Dominican (1-4-1, 0-2-1 GMAC) converted on one of two penalty kicks on the evening the second coming in the 78th minute. Jaxson Szabo converted his second goal of the half and night in the 78th minute tying the match at 2-2. 

Late in regulation the Panthers (3-2, 1-1 GMAC) fought off the ODU attack and played the last 90 seconds a man down as Josh Barnett exited with a yellow card. Lucas Daunhauer helped preserve the deadlock with a late save, his ninth of the match. 

Daunhauer need not be tested in the extra period as the Panthers took the opening kick and quickly moved into the ODU zone. David Flores dumped a perfect pass to Protheroe who maneuvered into the middle of the box. Left one-on-one with Ian Crook, who charged out towards the Panthers' midfielder, but was too late as Protheroe converted into the middle right of the net.

The match started quickly for the Panthers who sprinted out to a 1-0 lead on Jake Peveler's first goal of the season. Max Wawrin, deep in the ODU zone, passed back to Julian Gonzalez who found Peveler open on the right side of the net. 

The pressure continued throughout the first 15 minutes of the match, but the Panther's lead remained at 1-0. In the 25th minute, Dominican missed on a penalty kick, hitting the right post. Daunhauer made seven saves in the first half, preserving a shut-out at the break. 

Wesleyan added another score on David Flores' first goal of the season in the 65th minute. Selvin Hernandez served a free kick from midfield to Flores who shot was chipped into the right side of the net. 

The lead was short lived as ODU scored twice in an eight minute stretch from the 70th minute to the 78th. 

The Panthers will host Cedarville on Saturday afternoon. The match is schedule to start at 12 PM.
