OWENSBORO, KY. - The Kentucky Wesleyan College soccer team suffered its first defeat of the season on Saturday. Wesleyan came out on top in every facet of the contest with the exception of the final score. Cincinnati Christian University shut-out the Panthers 1-0 in the final match before the start of Great Midwest Conference play.
The lone blemish in the first half came in the 31st minute as Lucas Daunhauer went out to contest an attack. The Eagles (3-3) provided enough of a disruption to avoid Daunhauer and score game-winner.
The Panthers (2-1) took eight shots in the first half, three on goal. James Spindley, although tested and under heavy pressure, was able to make to the saves. Wesleyan answered with more pressure int the second half.
Throughout the day, the Panthers held possession for 47% of the time, but the majority of their time (73%) was spent in the Eagles zone. The Panthers kept the attack moving forward. With 25 minutes left in the match both Austin Moore and Zach Moore misfired on well struck shot attempts. Another good look came a few minutes later, but that shot went high.
Anatoli Gishe took a shot in the 79th minute, but Spalding again made the save. Just over a minute later Gishe was awarded a penalty kick, but Spindley again made the save as Declan Sandifer looked to put-away the deflection, but his attempt went high.
The attack continued into the final five minutes as Spindley made two more saves, this time against Ben Protheroe and Josh Barnett. The Panthers took 11 shots in the second half, five on goal. Daunhauer made one save on the day.
A new season will begin on Wednesday as the Panthers will travel to Nashville to open Great Midwest Conference action. Wesleyan will match-up against Trevecca Nazarene at 7 PM.
