OWENSBORO, Ky. – A hot start for the Kentucky Wesleyan College women's basketball team propelled them to their 14th straight win on Thursday evening, defeating Cedarville University 80-60 who was ranked second in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. The Yellow Jackets had given the Panthers their lone loss in conference play earlier this season but the Panthers responded with a 20-point victory for their 15th double digit victory of the season.
Both teams jumped out to a quick start, with the Panthers (18-3, 14-1 G-MAC) holding a 13-12 lead at the 4:32 mark. Wesleyan closed out the quarter with an 11-4 run to take a 24-16 lead after the first frame.
Wesleyan drained a three on their first three possessions of the second quarter to extend their lead to 17 with Shayla Wright, Kaylee Clifford and Emma Wolfe each contributing. The two teams traded three's in the final 30 seconds as the Panthers took a 47-37 lead to the break.
Less than a minute into the third, the Yellow Jackets had pulled with six. Back and forth play kept the deficit between seven and nine points over the next three minutes. Wesleyan halted Cedarville's momentum with a 9-0 run to regain a 16-point lead.
The Panthers were in cruise control from there, holding a double digit lead the remainder of the game. Wesleyan's defense shined in the final frame, holding the Yellow Jackets to eight points on 3-15 shooting.
Jenna Martin led the Panthers with 24 points followed closely by Keelie Lamb at 20. Clifford flirted with a double-double posting 12 points and eight rebounds. Lily Grimes had a team-high three assists while Lamb and Duncan tabbed one block a piece.
Wesleyan dominated the paint, scoring 32 of their 80 points in the paint. The Panthers scored 11 fast break points while outrebounding the Yellow Jackets 34-20.
The six-game home stand comes to a close on Saturday as the Panthers host Tiffin University at 12 pm CT. Wesleyan is a perfect 12-0 this season with a program-record 13 game home win streak dating back to last season.
