CLERMONT, Fla. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College softball team continued its tour through the Sunshine State on Tuesday. The Panthers split pair of games and moved to 2-1 on the week. Wesleyan defeated Davenport in a pitcher's duel, 3-1 before falling to Florida Southern 3-0 at the National Training Center.
Game 1: Kentucky Wesleyan - 3, Davenport – 1
Autumn Grady picked-up her first win of the year with a stellar performance. Grady pitched a complete game with the lone blemish being an unearned run that was pushed across on an error in the bottom of the first inning. The Panthers (4-5) took a quick 1-0 lead in the top half on
Lexie Mullen's single through the right side of a drawn in infield.
As Davenport tied the game in the bottom half as both pitchers continued to put-up scoreless innings. The defense behind Grady was equally as good. In the bottom of the third Davenport (2-6) was looking to break the tie with after a lead-off double. Gabby Palazzolo followed by ripping a line-drive into centerfield.
Terrilynn Summers fired a dart back into the infield and to the third base side of home plate.
Maddie Dawson applied the tag, saving a run from scoring.
A fly-out and ground-out followed to end the inning. The Panthers threatened again in the fifth inning. With two-outs and runner on second, Davenport elected to walk
Jaylin Tidwell. Mullen followed with an infield single to third to load the bases.
Abbey Winstead provided the big blow as she ripped a double down the left-field line, scoring a pair and giving Wesleyan a 3-1 lead. Davenport got the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but Summers caught anything in the air in the outfield to help preserve the Panthers' two-run advantage.
Grady faced 27 batters, allowing an unearned run in pitching a complete game. She forced 10 ground-outs and struck-out two in picking up the win. Mullen was four for four with four singles and RBI. Dawson went two for three with a walk and two runs scored.
Game 2: Florida Southern – 3, Kentucky Wesleyan – 1
In the second game,
Evyn Hendrickson got out of a bases loaded jam to in the top of the first inning allowing just one run. After a strikeout, the inning ended with a ground-out. Hendrickson pitched a complete game as she went the next five innings scoreless.
The Panthers were unable to mount any threat in an hour and 10-minute contest. The Moccasins (5-6) and starting pitcher Aubrey Ehlers kept Wesleyan off balanced throughout, allowing just two hits. The Mocs added two runs in the seventh for insurance.
Hendrickson allowed three runs, two earned on five hits with five strikeouts. Tidwell and Winstead accounted for the two Panther base hits.
Wesleyan has Wednesday off before picking back up against Saint Rose and Missouri-St. Louis on Thursday. First-pitch is scheduled for 1PM CT.
