Baseball Drops Two at Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College baseball team closed out a four-game series at Newberry College with a pair of losses on Sunday, falling 4-3 in game one and 5-0 in game two.
 
Game 1: KWC 3 – Newberry 4
The Panthers put runs on the board first, scoring one in the top of the second.  Brayden Sisson led off with a single to right center and reached third after a wild pitch and a groundout.  With two outs, Ian Ellis reached on a fielding error, allowing Sisson to score.
 
Newberry plated two runs in the bottom of the frame after a lead off triple.  The Wolves added on one run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly to take a 3-1 lead.
 
With one on and one out in the top of the fifth, Chase Andrews tucked a home run down the right field line for his first home run as a triple, which knotted the game at three.
 
The Wolves scored the eventual game winning run in the bottom of the sixth.  Wesleyan threatened in the top of the seventh, putting the game-tying run in scoring position with one out but were unable to move the runner.
 
Devin Smith got the start in game one, throwing 4.0 innings with three strikeouts and three runs off of five hits.  Joey Lara suffered his first loss of the season, going the final 2.0 innings with two strikeouts, three hits and one run.
 
Game 2: KWC 0 – Newberry 5
The Wolves offense erupted for four hits in the first inning to take a quick 2-0 lead.  Newberry plated one more run in the third and their final two runs in the sixth.  Cam Curry and Bradlee Fuhrhop led off the fourth and seventh with doubles but were unable to score.
 
Zach Burton scattered eight hits over five innings in his first loss of the season.  Mitchell Jones closed out the final 1.0 innings, allowing two runs off of three hits.
 
The Panthers return to action on Sunday, February 24 in Valdosta, Ga. as they open a three-game series at Valdosta State.
