CEDARVILLE, Ohio – The Kentucky Wesleyan College volleyball team stunned Cedarville University on Friday night, defeating the Yellow Jackets in straight sets in Great Midwest Athletic Conference action.
The 3-0 victory marked just the third time in 12 meetings that the Panthers took down Cedarville. With one week remaining in the regular season, Wesleyan currently sits in fifth place in the G-MAC.
The first set was the closest as the Panthers won 25-23. Cedarville opened with a 3-0 run before Wesleyan took three of the next four points to make it a one point deficit. The Panthers took their first lead after three straight points including a kill from
Jaylen McEwen to make it 8-7.
The two teams traded the next 12 points until Cedarville tallied four points to take a 20-15 lead, their largest of the set. Wesleyan stormed back with a 4-0 run capped off by back-to-back kills from
Danielle Brouillette and
Julia Moran to force a Cedarville time out. The Yellow Jackets took the next point to go ahead 21-19 before the Panthers took the next three. With the set knotted at 23,
Alexa Davis recorded a kill and a Cedarville attack error gave the Panthers the 25-23 win.
Wesleyan's offense was perfect in the second set, recording 12 kills and no errors while hitting .571. The Panthers recorded two separate 5-0 runs in the set plus tallied six straight points to close out the set. Three of the final six points came from kills by
Sierra Morrow while
Kylie Foster recorded one ace.
The third set was smooth sailing for the Panthers ahead. Facing an 11-8 deficit, Wesleyan went on a 9-1 run to jump out to a 17-12 lead. Back-to-back kills from
Nicole Martin put the Panthers ahead 23-14 and the junior went on to record the match sealing kill.
McEwen finished with a team high nine kills while Martin recorded six. Setters
Kylie Foster and
Lydia Jackson both tallied 13 assists.
Danielle Brouillette finished with seven blocks followed closely by Morrow at six.
The Panthers close out the regular season on the road next week, traveling to Columbus, Ohio to take on the Panthers of Ohio Dominican University.
