A Sweet Treat, Panthers Upend Oilers in Five

OWENSBORO, KY. - There was an abundance of tense moments inside Jones Gymnasium on Friday night as the Kentucky Wesleyan College volleyball team matched-up with University of Findlay. The Panthers had never beaten the Oilers as counterparts in the Great Midwest Conference until Friday. Wesleyan won in five sets, their four fifth set victory in seven tries this season.

Alexa Davis recorded four kills in the opening set as the Panthers (13-9, 6-2 GMAC) stormed through the frame. Wesleyan held a .387 attacking percentage and trounced the Oilers (6-17, 3-4 GMAC) 25-14. The duo of Jaylen McEwen and Sierra Morrow complemented Davis as they each tallied three kills in the opener.

The Oilers played inspired in the second and third set as they won both. Findlay and Wesleyan were tied at 10 in the second when the Oilers rattled off seven of eight points to coast to the finish line. The Panthers lead early in the third set, but the Oilers erased a 13-6 deficit to take a 2-1 lead after a 25-21 win of the third.

13537Findlay looked to close the door in the fourth. The Panthers held a slim 15-14 lead in the frame when Wesleyan found a spark that ignited a rally. Wesleyan won seven consecutive points to seize momentum and tied the match. The Panthers forced a fifth set after a 25-18 win in the fourth.

McEwen gave the Panthers a 8-6 lead in the final set, but the Oilers quickly tied the set after the changeover. McEwen had four kills in the final set including the kill that tied the frame at 11. Findlay took the lead on the ensuing point, but a kill by Julia Moran followed by another kill by Morrow give the Panthers a 13-12 lead.

Findlay evened the set at 13, but Morrow's kill gave the Panthers set point. An untimely error by the Oilers ended the match.

Both McEwen and Morrow finished with 13 kills. McEwen collected 18 digs while Morrow added six block assists. Kylie Foster help set-up the offense with 25 assists while Lydia Jackson added 22 assists. Nilah Roy led defensively with 22 digs.

The Panthers will host the Great Midwest frontrunner on Saturday afternoon. The match at Jones Gymnasium will start at 1 PM.
