INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Kentucky Wesleyan College volleyball team did not get much rest from Midterms at the Midwest Region Crossover Tournament on Friday. The Panthers won a pair five set matches to reach the 10 win plateau on the season.
Wesleyan started the day with a 3-2 victory over Northwood followed by a 3-2 win over Quincy to end the day. The Panthers were one of five teams to go 2-0 at Day 1 of the Midwest Region Crossover. The Great Midwest Athletic Conference picked up six wins on the day with Wesleyan being the only team to pick up two wins.
A back-and-forth affair broke out in the opener against the Wolves. Julia Moran ended the first set with a kill, giving the Panthers a 25-21 win. The Wolves hit .360 in the second frame and evened the match after a 25-17 win.
The two teams exchanged the third and fourth set, extending the match to a decisive fifth set. Wesleyan saved its best for last as they hit .421 in the final set. The Panthers took control early and led 7-3 after Danielle Brouillette's kill midway through the frame. Northwood attempted to make things interesting but Moran closed out the set and match with a kill, 15-12.
Brouillette finished with 11 kills and six block assists. Moran added 10 kills and three block assists. Lydia Jackson recorded 20 assists.
Wesleyan hit .257 in the five set final on Friday against Quincy. After taking the opening set, 25-21 the Panthers dropped the second and third set. However, the deficit was erased in the fourth set as the Panthers charged out in front 15-10.
Nicole Martin sparked a 5-0 run that built a 20-11 lead, allowing the Panthers to cruise to 25-19 win in set four. Sierra Morrow tied the final set at 10 with a kill but the Hawks (9-13) took the next two points to retake the lead.
Jaylen McEwen recorded two of the next four Panthers points, including the final tally in the run that gave Wesleyan match point. Quincy tied the set again, this time at 14, but a service error allowed the Panthers a second match-point. This time Brouillette converted the match-winning point.
Martin finished the match with 18 kills while Brouillette, McEwen and Moran each added 14. Jackson dished out 45 assists while Nilah Roy collected 30 digs.
The Panthers will get a rematch with Southern Indiana tomorrow as the Midwest Crossover continues. The match is scheduled to start at 12 pm CT.
