ELKINS, W. Va. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College women's basketball team posted their sixth straight victory on Thursday evening, shutting down the Senators of Davis & Elkins College by a score of 78-61. The 17-point win marks the fourth consecutive Great Midwest Athletic Conference victory for the Panthers.
Wesleyan led the entire 40 minutes, not even allowing the Senators to tie the game. The Panthers knocked back 11 three-point shots while boasting a shooting percentage of .520 from the floor to Davis & Elkins' .417.
Kaylee Clifford opened the scoring for the Panthers before Kelsey Ivers drained back to back jumpers. Clifford went on to score seven points in the first ten minutes of action as Wesleyan took a 20-13.
The Panther defense was a brick wall in the second quarter, holding the Senators to just nine points in the quarter and shutting them down from beyond the arc. Despite not earning a trip to charity stripe, Wesleyan was able to extend their lead to 35-22 entering the locker room.
The Senators came out of the break firing, matching Wesleyan's 22 points on the board. Wesleyan maintained their double-digit lead throughout the third quarter to take a 13-point lead to the final frame.
Kaylee Duncan nailed a three point shot at the 7:41 mark to put the Panthers ahead by 22, their largest lead of the game. Davis & Elkins trimmed the deficit to 14 before back to back fast break lay ups from Emma Johnson and Lily Grimes halted the Senators progress.
Clifford led the Panthers with 19 points while grabbing a team-high five rebounds. Duncan scored 14 points off the bench while Keelie Lamb and Jenna Martin also reached double figures at 12 points a piece. Lamb and Grimes dished out four assists each while Lamb, Martin and Grimes all tabbed three steals.
Wesleyan forced 21 turnovers while tallying 13 steals on the night. The Panthers scored 28 points in the paint while tabbing seven second chance points.
The Panthers close out the weekend road trip in Philippi, W. Va. where they will face the Battlers of Alderson Broaddus University. Tip off is set for 1 pm CT on Saturday.
