Not Backing Down

XENIA, Ohio – An early lead by the Kentucky Wesleyan College softball team was erased by Ohio Dominican twice on Thursday evening as the Great Midwest Conference Tournament continued at Athletes in Action Sports Complex. The Panthers came back each time to upset ODU after a 11-10 walk-off victory in eight innings. Jaylin Tidwell came-up with the clutch hit while heads-up base-running by Lexie Mullen advanced Wesleyan into the next round.

10149All three pitchers played a part in the victory as Maci Brown started the contest. The Panthers (27-24) lead at 4-1 and 10-6 only to see the leads disappear. Lexie Mullen doubled in the game's first run in the bottom of the first. Wesleyan scored twice in the frame and two more times in the second. Jaclyn Parker and Mullen each drove in a run in the second as the Panthers took a 4-1 lead.

After four innings, the Panthers' led 4-2, but a four-run fifth chased Brown from the contest for Autumn Grady. Trailing 6-4 Wesleyan gave a loud response with six runs in the bottom half, all with two outs. Delaney Mixer started the two-out rally with a RBI single. She later scored on Andee Powell's single through the right side.

Jamie Tempel kept the rally going with a RBI double which was followed by Meredith Daunhauer's two-run double. Maddie Dawson singled up the middle to score another run while Mullen returned to plate for the second time in the frame and drove-in another tally, giving the Panthers a 10-6 lead.

ODU (33-20) cut the Panthers' lead in half with two runs in the top of the sixth. Ohio Dominican was down to their last strike with the bases loaded in the seventh when Brooklyn Rayburn ripped a two-run double into left. Evyn Hendrickson got the final out shortly thereafter to move the game into extras.

As darkness moved in the game was moved to the adjacent field with lights. Hendrickson made easy work of ODU in the top half while Mullen was due to lead off the bottom of the eighth. A single from Mullen started the inning, a sacrifice bunt from Courtney Lockwood moved the winning run into scoring position.

Taylor Farmer bounced her pitch into home plate as Mullen took off for third and made it safely under the tag. Tidwell ended the game with sharp single through the right side.

Mullen finished the game five for five with two doubles, two runs scored, and three RBIs. Danuhauer was two for four with a double and two RBIs. Hendrickson picked-up the win after 2.2 innings of relief.

The Panthers will face Hillsdale on Friday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 12PM CT.
