Panthers Flash Leather in Win over Davenport, Fall to Point Park

CLERMONT, FL. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College softball team opened its annual Spring Break trip with a split on Monday. The Panthers took down Davenport 5-4 in extra innings before losing to Point Park University 8-2 in the finale.

GAME 1: Davenport 4, Kentucky Wesleyan 5 (8INN)
The Panthers (3-6) did all the little things in the opener, continually executing defensively. Falling behind 1-0 after one, Wesleyan tied the game on an error while Jamie Tempel's single down the right-field line gave the Panthers a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second.

Autumn Grady made the lead stick through five innings before Davenport (6-2) scored three times in the top of the sixth inning, taking a 4-2 lead. With one away in the seventh, Tempel again stepped to the plate with Andee Powell on base and one out. Going to the deepest park of the park, Tempel blasted a game-tying two-run homerun over the centerfield fence.

In the eighth with the tiebreakers rule in effect, Powell made the defensive play of the game with a sharply hit ground ball to third. Powell pump faked to first causing the runner to break for third and was eventually out after a run-down. On the next play Courtney Lockwood followed the defensive gems by throwing behind the lead runner, getting the second out at second base. Grady got the final out with a strikeout, her fifth of the game.

Jaylin Tidwell led off the bottom half with a runner on second with a bunt. The throw to first was errant and Maddie Dawson never stopped running to home. Grady earned her first win of the year with a complete-game, allowing four runs, three earned. Tempel finished the game two for three with homerun and three RBIs.

GAME 2: Kentucky Wesleyan 2, Point Park 8
Lexie Mullen started the second game against the Pioneers (1-2) with a RBI single in the top of the first. Hannah Slack marched through four innings with a 1-0 lead. However, Point Park scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth and sixth to take a commanding 8-1 lead.

The Panthers loaded the bases in the seventh as Mullen drove in another with her third hit of the game. The threat ended there as Wesleyan left nine runners on-base in the game. Slack picked-up the loss after four plus innings, allowing three runs with one strikeout.

Wesleyan will be back in action tomorrow morning. The Panthers will play Dominican College at 9 AM ET with the second game against Gannon scheduled for 11:30 AM.
