NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College women's basketball team held a two-point lead after three quarters of a play, but a strong final frame from the Bulldogs of Truman State University handed the Panthers a 71-59 loss to close out the Pops Duncan Classic hosted by Trevecca Nazarene.
Truman opened the game with a 7-0 run that was halted by a three-point basket from Kaylee Duncan. The Bulldogs shot 53.8% from field goal range to take a 20-10 lead after one.
The Panthers faced a 12-point deficit in the second frame but utilized a 13-2 run to make it a one-point game. Cali Nolot drilled a jumper as time expired to give Wesleyan a 31-30 lead at the break, their first lead of the game.
Back-to-back three's from Jenna Martin extended Wesleyan's lead to seven before Emma Johnson sunk a pair of free throws, giving the Panthers their largest lead of the game at nine. Wesleyan led the entire third quarter and another buzzer beater, this time from Lily Grimes, gave them a 48-46 lead entering the final frame.
The Bulldogs controlled the fourth quarter, scoring 25 points off of 46.2% shooting. Nolot converted a three-point play with 2:09 remaining to cut the deficit to seven but the comeback bid fell short.
Grimes led the Panthers with 14 points while Nolot scored 11 off the bench. Martin tabbed 10 points while leading the team with three assists. Kelsey Ivers paved the way with eight rebounds, seven of which were defensive.
Wesleyan returns to Owensboro next weekend for their first home game of the season. The Panthers host Ohio Christian on Thursday, November 15 with tip off set for 6 pm CT at the Sportscenter.
