Second Half Charge by Hillsdale Edges Panthers

HILLSDALE, Mich. - The Kentucky Wesleyan College men's basketball team was edged by Hillsdale College on Thursday evening. The Panthers led most of the first half, but the script was flipped in the second as the Chargers took the lead and made 15 of 16 free throws down the stretch to take a 74-63 Great Midwest victory.

The Panthers (12-10, 6-6 G-MAC) led by as many as nine points late into the first half, but did not score in the final 2:46. The Chargers (16-4, 10-3 G-MAC) were disturbed by the fast pace of the game, but slowed the tempo in the final few minutes of the opening frame to draw within 33-31 at the break.

Malek Harris hit a jumper with 2:46 left in the first half to give the Panthers a 33-24 lead. Hillsdale went into the locker-room on a 7-0 run to draw within two points.

Wesleyan's scoring drought continued for another 5:33 at the start of the second. In total, the Chargers marched on a 17-0 rally as they scored the first 10 points of the second stanza. Daniel Dzierzawski ended the run with a jumper while moments later the Panthers trailed 44-35 with 14 minutes left in the game.

Rasheide Bell started an 11-0 run with a jumper of his own as Harris tied the game with two free throws. Evan Milligan returned the lead to the Panthers with a fade-away jumper at the 11 minute mark.

Chandler Redix tied the game a 48 a few minutes later, but the Chargers retook control with two Nate Neveau free-throws with less than eight minutes left in the game. The Panthers would not be able to draw even the rest of the way. Hillsdale converted 15 of their final 16 foul shots in the final eight minutes. For the game the Chargers made 26 of 29 while the Panthers knocked-down 10 of 13 from the charity stripe.

The game featured four ties and 12 lead change, but Hillsdale was able to convert the clutch shots and get to the foul line in crunch time.

Harris finished the game 14 points and eight rebounds to lead the Panthers. Milligan made six of his eight shots and added 13 points off the bench. Milligan also grabbed eight rebounds. Bell recorded 12 points while Dzierzwaski and Brandon Hatton each finished with 10 points

The Panthers will travel to Findlay, Ohio on Saturday to play the Oilers. Tip-off is scheduled for 12 PM CT.
