NASHVILLE, TENN. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College volleyball team extended its winning streak to five matches on Tuesday evening in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference season opener. The Panthers erased a 2-0 deficit against Trevecca Nazarene University to win the match in five sets (20-25, 16-25, 25-14, 25-14, 15-10).
Danielle Brouillette held a .550 attacking percentage while recording a team-best 12 kills in the comeback win.
The Trojans (3-7, 0-1 GMAC) took advantage early, taking a 1-0 lead after winning the opening set 25-20. TNU built a four point cushion early and kept its edge throughout the set. Momentum continued to grow for the Trevecca in the second set, racing out to 25-16 win and take a 2-0 lead.
The Panthers (5-4, 1-0 GMAC) dominated the third set. Tied a 10-10,
Julia Moran's kill started a run that saw Wesleyan win 15 of the next 19 points.
Gabrielle Gallois finished things off with her fourth kill of the match on set-point.
The fourth set was tied at seven and in similar fashion the Panthers seized momentum and embarked on an overpowering rally. Wesleyan won the next six points which cleared the way for a 25-14 win of the frame and forced a decisive fifth set.
Things continued to go south for the Trojans in the fifth set as their attacking percentage dipped into the negative. Unforced errors coupled with strong offensive attacks by the Panthers kept TNU far from a comeback. Wesleyan took the final frame 15-10.
Courtney Gildea setup the offense with 15 assists while also recording 13 digs.
Nicole Venema led the Panthers defensively with 20 digs.
Kylie Foster added 12 assists and 10 digs.
Sierra Morrow finished with six kills and six blocks.
The Panthers return home on Friday as GMAC play continues with Walsh. The match is scheduled to start at 7 PM.
