PARKERSBURG, W. Va. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College closed out its first Great Midwest Athletic Conference series of the season with a split at Ohio Valley on Monday, defeating the Fighting Scots 9-3 in game one and suffering a 3-1 loss in game two. With the split the Panthers move to 12-13 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
Game One: Kentucky Wesleyan 9 – Ohio Valley 3
The Panthers were unable to tab a hit in the first two innings, finding themselves in a two-run deficit. The offense woke up the in top of the third, scoring four runs off of four hits, all with two outs.
Josh Galvan stepped up to the plate with two outs and runners on the corners. Galvan cleared the bases with a double to right field, knotting the game at two. Adam Brown drove in Galvan with a triple to center field and scored on a single from Jacob Snodgrass.
The Fighting Scots threatened in the bottom of the sixth with two runners in scoring position and only one out. Alex Franzen dug in and recorded a strikeout and a fly out to end the threat.
Kentucky Wesleyan extended its lead with four more runs in the top of the seventh. Brown and Snodgrass each tabbed a one-run single while Levi Tanner drove in one with a double to right center. Seth Campbell lined out to centerfield but was able to bring home Snodgrass from third.
Galvan and Snodgrass both went three-for-four in game one while Brown finished two-for-four. Galvan led the Panthers with three RBI's while Brown and Snodgrass each tabbed two.
Mitch Jones picked up his first win on the season, striking out four and allowed two runs off of three hits in 5.1 innnigs. Franzen earned his fourth save of the season, striking out three and allowing only one hit in 1.2 innings pitched.
Game Two: Kentucky Wesleyan 1 – Ohio Valley 3
A pitchers dual in game two saw only three hits in the first four innings for the Panthers. Ohio Valley took a 1-0 lead after four, scoring on a single up the middle.
Cody Bridges drew a walk to lead off the top of the fifth and stole second to get into scoring position. With two outs and Bridges 90 feet away, Snodgrass knocked a base hit through the left side to bring home Bridges and tie the game at one.
A scoreless two innings kept the game knotted at one entering the eighth inning. The Fighting Scots scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth with a lead-off double followed by three straight singles. Kentucky Wesleyan was unable to start a rally, tabbing only one hit and two base runners in the final three innings.
Snodgrass and Cody Jackson recorded two hits in game two with Snodgrass driving in the lone run. Tanner and Campbell tabbed one hit a piece.
Sammy Holder suffered his third loss of the season, striking out two and allowing three runs off of eight hits in 7.0 innings. In one inning of relief Spencer Jackson held Ohio Valley scoreless with two hits.
The Panthers will be back in action on Tuesday as they head to Louisville, Ky. for a doubleheader against Bellarmine beginning at 1 pm CT.
