OWENSBORO, Ky. – A pair of complete game shut outs from Maci Brown and Casey Smith helped the Kentucky Wesleyan College softball team blank Alderson Broaddus twice on Friday afternoon in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference matchup. With the two wins, the Panthers improve to 24-16 overall and 9-5 in the conference.
Game One: Alderson Broaddus 0 – Kentucky Wesleyan 4
The Panthers wasted no time getting on the board, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Meredith Daunhauer led off with a bunt single and eventually scored on a monster double to right center from Jaylin Tidwell.
Facing two outs and two on, Lexi Mullen singled to center field to bring home Tidwell. Abbey Winstead kept things going with a hard hit single up the middle to score Courtney Lockwood and cap off the five hit, three run inning.
A pitchers dual saw only four hits over the next four innings. Kentucky Wesleyan tacked on its final run in the bottom of the fifth inning with Daunhauer scoring on a sacrifice fly from Tidwell.
Maci Brown dominated her conference-leading 12th with of the season and third complete game shut out, holding the Battlers to three hits while striking out four.
Daunhauer finished two-for-four at the plate with two runs scored while Winstead went two-for-three. Maddie Dawson, Tidwell, Mullen and Tempel each finished with one hit. Tidwell led the Panthers two runs batted in while Mullen and Winstead drove in one a piece.
Game Two: Alderson Broaddus 0 – Kentucky Wesleyan 3
Kentucky Wesleyan struck early again in game two with Tempel smashing a triple to right field in the bottom of the second, scoring Winstead to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.
That lead was extended to three in the bottom of the third after Tidwell launched her second home run of the season, a two-run blast to left center field.
In her first complete game shut out of the season, Casey Smith allowed only five Battlers to reach base, with only one reaching scoring position. Smith struck out six and allowed two hits and one walk.
Tidwell finished game two two-for-three at the plate with two runs batted in. Dawson, Winstead and Tempel recorded one hit each.
On the day, Meredith Daunhauer stole two bases to reach 32 on the season. The sophomore is four away from tying the single season record of 36 set by Stacy Noble in 1996.
The two teams will finish the weekend series on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 10 am CT.
