Smith's No-Hitter Leads Panthers to Sweep Thorobreds

OWENSBORO, Ky. – Casey Smith tossed her third career no-hitter on Wednesday, helping the Kentucky Wesleyan College softball team down Kentucky State University 8-0 before taking game two 11-3.  With the non-conference sweep, the Panthers improve to 15-9 on the season.

Game One: Kentucky State 0 – Kentucky Wesleyan 8 (five innings)

Smith flirted with perfection, striking out three in the first three innings and not allowing a base runner until the fourth inning.  The Thorobreds were held to three base runners all game.  Smith picked up her third win, striking out four and allowing one walk over five innings pitched.

The Panthers scored two runs in the first innings and that's all it took.  Meredith Daunhauer led off with a bunt single and would score on a double steal.  Courtney Lockwood drove in Maddie Dawson with a sacrifice fly to put Kentucky Wesleyan ahead 2-0.

Two more runs in the second extended the Panthers lead to four.  With two runners in scoring position, Jamie Tempel knocked a single to left field to bring home Mallory Nease.  Two batters later, Dawson drove in Jaclyn Parker with a single to right field.

Daunhauer took advantage of a throwing error to tack on a run in the fourth inning.  With two outs and runners on the corners, Lexi Mullen blasted the ball to straight away center for her fourth home run of the season.

Daunhauer and Dawson both finished game one two-for-three at the plate while Tidwell and Mullen each went one-for-three.  Mullen led the Panthers with three runs batted in while Daunhauer led with two runs scored.

Game Two: Kentucky State 3 – Kentucky Wesleyan 11 (five innings)

Kentucky State tabbed three hits in the second inning to score three runs for their first lead of the game.  Nease put the Panthers on the board in the bottom of the frame with her third home run of the season, a solo shot to center field.

The Panthers pounded out eight hits to plate 10 runs in the third.   Three straight singles from Dauhauer, Dawson and Jaylin Tidwell to score two runs.  Another run of three straight singles from Nease, Abbey Winstead and Parker scored four more runs.  The scoring was capped off with a RBI single from Daunhauer and a sacrifice fly from Dawson.

Nease finished game two a perfect three-for-three at the plate with three runs driven in and one scored herself.  Daunhauer, Tidwell and Winstead each tabbed two hits while Dawson and Parker recorded one.  Maci Brown earned her sixth win on the season, striking out one and allowing four hits and three runs in three innings.  In two innings of relief, Jessica Carmon struck out one and held the Thorobreds hitless.

The Panthers open Great Midwest Athletic Conference play this weekend with a series against Ohio Valley.  Kentucky Wesleyan will head to Vienna, W. Va. for a pair of doubleheaders on March 24 and 25, both set for an 11 am CT start.
