Women's Basketball Secures No. 4 Seed with 58-34 Win at Trevecca Nazarene

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Guard Shayla Wright scored a career high 18 points on Saturday to help the Kentucky Wesleyan College women's basketball team beat Great Midwest Athletic Conference opponent Trevecca Nazarene, 58-34, in its regular season finale.  With the victory, the Panthers secure the fourth seed in the G-MAC conference tournament and will face the fifth seed Davis & Elkins in the first round.

Kentucky Wesleyan finished the regular season with five wins in its final six games to post an overall record of 19-7 and 8-6 in the conference.

Jennifer Walker-Crawford opened the game with a pair of lay ups to put the Panthers ahead quickly.  Kentucky Wesleyan led the entire first quarter until the Trojans nailed a three-pointer in the closing seconds to take their first lead of the game at 14-12.

The Panthers dominated the second quarter, scoring 24 points while holding the Trojans to just six.  Brittany Wells and Shayla Wright combined for 10 points in the final two minutes of the half, giving the Panthers a 36-20 lead at the break.

During the third frame, the Panthers tabbed five steals and forced 13 turnovers to outscore Trevecca 14-7 and extend its lead to 50-27.  Erin Dorn drilled a jump shot to beat the buzzer and give Kentucky Wesleyan a 23-point lead entering the final quarter.

Codie Drake notched a free throw midway through the fourth quarter to put the Panthers ahead by 26 points, their largest of the game.  Kentucky Wesleyan showed its strong defense again in the final frame, keeping the Trojans at seven points and holding on for the 58-34 win.

Shayla Wright led all scorers with 18 points after shooting six-for-ten from field goal range and draining three shots from beyond the arc.  Walker-Crawford finished with 10 points, six rebounds and three steals.  Dorn and Sydney Morabito each finished with five points.  Wells also recorded three steals while scoring eight points.

The Panthers scored 18 points off of turnovers plus 13 second chance points.  Kentucky Wesleyan held the advantage in rebounds, 46 to 31, and shot 68.4% (13-for-19) from the charity stripe.

Kentucky Wesleyan will face the fifth seed Davis & Elkins in the first round of the G-MAC conference tournament on Thursday, Mar 1 at 4 pm CT at regular season champion Ursuline.
