CEDARVILLE, Ohio – The Kentucky Wesleyan College women's basketball team fell 80-62 to the sharp shooting Cedarville University on Saturday afternoon. The Yellowjackets made half their three-point attempts while defensively forcing the Panthers into rushed and contested shots from the field.
The Panthers (4-4, 0-4 G-MAC) hung tough in the opening frame trailing 11-8 through the first five minutes. The Yellowjackets (7-1, 2-0 G-MAC) tried to edge ahead and with Stevie Johnting's lay-up at the end of the frame established a 22-14 CED lead. Johnting scored 15 points on the day, eight first quarter points for the Yellowjackets.
A slow start to the second quarter was the only opening the Yellowjackets needed as they began to extend their lead. Through the first three minutes of the frame, CED went on a 10-2 run to build a 32-16 lead. The Yellowjackets led by as many as 23 points in the second, but a late three by
Emma Wolfe and a lay-up from
Codie Drake created a 45-25 deficit.
After three frames, Wesleyan trailed 67-38. The Panthers found the offensive answer in the fourth quarter as they outscored the Yellowjackets 24-13. However, the damage over the first three quarters created too much separation.
Jasmine Shelt finished with 11 points and seven rebounds on the afternoon. The trio of Drake, Wolfe, and
Kaylee Clifford each added nine points. CED shot 51% from the field to the Panthers 33%.
Wesleyan will have a week to get ready for Trevecca Nazarene University on December 16
th. Tip-off at the Owensboro Sportscenter is scheduled for 1 PM CT.
