OWENSBORO, Ky. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College women's basketball team overcame a 19 point first half deficit on Saturday afternoon but the late comeback was not enough as the Panthers fell 64-56 to Great Midwest Athletic Conference newcomer Hillsdale College.
The Panthers move to 4-2 overall and 0-2 in the conference while the Chargers improve to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in G-MAC play.
A pair of free throws at the 8:16 mark of the third quarter gave Hillsdale a 21-point lead, their largest of the game. The Panthers fought back to outscore the Chargers 18-12 in the frame, cutting the deficit to 13 entering the final quarter. Kentucky Wesleyan tallied eight points in a 50 second span with Kaylee Clifford tabbing a three pointer, lay up and free throw.
The Panthers chipped away in the fourth quarter and cut the Charger lead to single digits with just over six minutes remaining with a three pointer from Addie Reimbold. Keelie Lamb drained a three pointer of her own with 19 seconds remaining but Kentucky Wesleyan was unable to close the gap.
Jasmine Shelt led the offense with 13 points followed by Clifford at 10. Lamb tabbed eight rebounds with six coming on offense. Jenna Martin and Lily Grimes each dished out three assists while Shelt, Grimes and Kelsey Ivers recorded two steals a piece.
Kentucky Wesleyan hits the road this week for their first road trip of the season. The Panthers head to Ohio Dominican on Thursday followed by Cedarville on Saturday.
