OWENSBORO, Ky. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College women's basketball team went into the holiday break on a high note on Tuesday afternoon, posting a 70-51 victory over Great Midwest Athletic Conference newcomer Lake Erie College.
With the win, the Panthers improve to 6-4 overall and 2-4 in conference play while the Storm move to 5-5 overall and 2-3 in the G-MAC.
Lake Erie held a four point lead midway through the first frame but the Panthers fought back with a seven point run to take a 12-9 lead with three's from
Jasmine Shelt and
Emma Wolfe, and a pair of lay ups from
Jenna Martin.
The Panthers took their first double digit lead at the 4:36 mark of the second quarter on a lay up from
Kaylee Clifford.
Addie Reimbold drained a three pointer to put Kentucky Wesleyan ahead by 18, their largest lead of the first half. Nine Panthers tallied points in the first half to take a 40-29 lead to the break.
Kentucky Wesleyan never surrendered its double digit lead, extending it to 19 points in the final minute thanks to a lay up from Reimbold. A strong Panther defense forced 16 turnovers in the second half en route to the conference win.
Martin led the Panthers with 16 points along with three steals and two assists. Reimbold, Shelt and
Shayla Wright each tabbed nine points. Shelt led the team with two blocks while
Keelie Lamb led with seven rebounds.
The Panther bench accounted for 41 points including 16 in the final frame. The Panthers scored 27 points off of turnovers and 32 points in the paint.
Kentucky Wesleyan hits the road for their final game of the calendar year. The Panthers head to Pepper Pike, Ohio to take on Ursuline College at 1 pm CT on December 30.
