The Right Moves, Panthers Down Yellowjackets in Four

OWENSBORO, KY. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College volleyball team had the right moves on Friday night as they took down Cedarville University in four sets. Nilah Roy finished with 13 kills on the night, leading the Panthers to the Great Midwest victory (28-26, 25-12, 21-25, 25-23).

The Panthers (13-18, 8-8 GMAC) raced out to a 14-5 lead in the opening set. Suddenly, the momentum shifted and the Yellowjackets (16-15, 11-5 GMAC) pulled within 15-14. The set began to swing back-and-forth when four straight points brought the Panthers to 24-21 lead. However, another four straight points brought the Yellowjackets to a point of taking the opening set.

Sierra Morrow's kill gave the Panthers a 26-25 lead, but the Yellowjackets found the answer. Roy gave Wesleyan another shot at the win after her kill, 27-26. Off the bench came Nicole Venema whose ace ended the set, giving the Panthers the early lead.

Wesleyan dominated the second set, racing out to a 17-5 lead and never looking back. The Panthers hit .350 in the opening set and .241 in the second in taking a 2-0 lead.

Cedarville came out of the break with renewed energy. The Panthers held a 13-10 lead in the third set before the Yellowjackets won seven of eight points to take a 17-14 lead. Cedarville continued to edge in front while an attacking error ended the set, 25-21.

The Yellowjackets edged ahead early in the fourth set and continued to hang on to a 22-17 lead late. Three straight blocks brought the Panthers to within 22-20, but the run did not stop there as Danielle Brouillette tied the set with back-to-back aces. A kill by Audrey Baysinger followed by another ace from Brouillette gave Wesleyan a 24-22 lead.

A kill by Krissy Pratt cut the Cedarville deficit to 24-23, but Baysinger ended the match with a kill. The Panthers finished with an attacking percentage of .234. Baysinger also reached double figures in kills with 10. She also recorded four blocks. Morrow and Brouillette each recorded five blocks while Courtney Gildea and Lydia Jackson each finished with 18 assists. Hannah Pierce collected 16 digs.

The Panthers will host Ohio Dominican on Saturday afternoon. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 PM.
