OWENSBORO, Ky. – After dropping the first set, the Kentucky Wesleyan College volleyball team bounced back to post a 3-1 victory over Maryville University on Tuesday night in a non-conference matchup. With the win, the Panthers improve to 11-16 on the season while the Saints fall to 2-22.
Kentucky Wesleyan scored the first three points of the match but the Saints stormed back with eight straight points to take a five-point lead.
Danielle Brouillette stopped the Saints momentum with a kill that sparked a four point run for the Panthers including kills from
Audrey Baysinger,
Hannah Pierce and
Courtney Gildea. Maryville regained control of the set with another five-point run and went on to take the first set 25-17.
The second set started off to a tight start with neither team able to gain more than a two-point lead. The Saint pulled away with a five-point run but Kentucky Wesleyan responded with a 5-1 run to tie it up at 13 capped off with a service ace from
Courtney Gildea. The Panthers extended its lead to 17-14 with a consecutive kill and service ace from
Nilah Roy. Kentucky Wesleyan held a 21-17 that quickly disappeared as things were knotted up at 22. The Panthers closed out the set with three straight points including a kill from Roy and a service ace from Gildea.
Kentucky Wesleyan took a commanding 6-2 lead to open the third set with
Jaylen McEwen and
Danielle Brouillette each tallying one kill. The Saint utilized a six-point run to take a 16-15 lead but Kentucky Wesleyan responded with two straight kills from
Sierra Morrow and Roy to take a 18-16 lead. Another five-point run from Maryville allowed the Saints to regain a 21-19 lead but the Panthers recorded a 7-1 run to close out the set 25-22.
Autumn Harris and Brouillette each tallied kills while Gildea tabbed one service ace.
During the fourth set, three straight attack errors by the Saints allowed Kentucky Wesleyan to take an 11-9 lead. Brouillette and Roy strung together a four-point run to extend the Panthers lead to six-points. The Saints pulled within three at 24-21 but Brouillette closed out the match with a kill.
Kentucky Wesleyan tabbed nine service aces on the match including three from both Gildea and Roy. Roy led all players with 15 kills while adding 12 digs and one block. Brouillette led the Panthers with three blocks while Gildea tallied 37 assists. Pierce led the defense with 14 digs.
The Panthers return to Great Midwest Athletic Conference play this weekend as they host Trevecca Nazarene University on Saturday, October 28th at 1 pm CT.
