Women’s soccer opens up conference play with 1-0 win at Ohio Valley

Kentucky Wesleyan recorded their first win of the 2016 season with a 1-0 victory on the road at Ohio Valley in Great Midwest Athletic Conference play on Thursday afternoon. The Panthers 1-2, (1-0 G-MAC) scored the only goal in the match midway through the second half to preserve the victory. It was also Kentucky Wesleyan's first goal of the season.

Both teams were held scoreless heading into halftime, but had several shot opportunities on-goal. KWC came out firing in the first ten minutes of the contest with three shots, two of which were on-goal, but came up empty. OVU returned the favor as the half progressed on, but neither team was able to break through.

In the second half, Kelsey Humphries provided the only goal of the contest at the 58:59 mark of the match to give the Panthers the advantage. The Panthers as a team collected 16 shots throughout the match, with nine total shots on goal.

Ohio Valley tried to even score late, as the Fighting Scots produced three shots in the final three minutes, but the Panthers held on for the win.

Goalkeeper Taylor Rentchler registered a career-high nine saves in the contest. KWC fought off a total of 18 shots from Ohio Valley in the match.

Ellen Tichenor led Kentucky Wesleyan with two shots on-goal in the match. Several other Panthers, including Skylar Walden, Kelsey Humphries, Makenzie McDonald, and Kaley Burnette each had multiple shot attempts in the match.

Kentucky Wesleyan will travel to Cedarville for a Saturday Great Midwest Athletic Conference afternoon matchup. The match has been tabbed for a 3:30 CT start.
