OWENSBORO, Ky. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College women's basketball overcame a 17-point deficit to defeat Asbury 74-49 on Saturday afternoon. The victory broke a school record for the Panthers with their ninth straight win, breaking an eight-game winning streak record held by the 1991-92 team. Kentucky Wesleyan improves to 9-1 on the season while Asbury falls to 7-9. Panthers Shayla Wright, Jennifer Walker-Crawford, and Brittany Wells each scored in double digits.
The Panthers struggled in the first quarter, and found themselves in a 22-5 hole with just over one minute remaining in the frame. Kentucky Wesleyan went on an 8-0 run to open the second quarter to cut the Eagles' lead to 25-18. Wells contributed eight points in a 15-3 run that gave Kentucky Wesleyan a slim 33-31 lead at the half, their first lead of the game.
Kentucky Wesleyan opened the second half with another 8-0 run to jump out to a 10-point lead with Wells draining a three-point shot and two layups. The Panthers outscored the Eagles 25-11 in the third quarter to take a commanding 58-42 lead into the final frame.
The Panthers kept pounding the fourth quarter and jumped out to a 28-point lead, their largest of the game, thanks to a three-pointer from Wright. Turnovers proved costly for the Eagles as they gave up 31-points off 11 turnovers. Kentucky Wesleyan also outscored Asbury in the paint by a tally of 36 to 10.
Wells led all scorers with 24 points and was 6-for-8 from the free-throw line. The senior guard also tabbed three steals and two assists. Walker-Crawford and Shayla Wright each contributed 14 points and one block. Wright grabbed five rebounds while Walker-Crawford was five-for-nine in field goals. The Wright sisters led the Panthers with four defensive rebounds apiece while Bria led with seven total rebounds.
The Panthers will be back in action on Jan. 5 as they head to Vienna, W.V. to take on Ohio Valley in their first Great Midwest Athletic Conference game of the season at 5 pm. They'll go up against Cedarville on Jan. 7 at 1 pm before returning home on Jan. 12 to host Ursuline.
