Women’s Basketball Opens G-MAC Play with 10th Straight Win

VIENNA, W. Va. – Kentucky Wesleyan College's women's basketball team rolled out its 10th straight win of the season, opening Great Midwest Athletic Conference Play with a 73-60 win over Ohio Valley University Thursday night.  The Panthers improve to 10-1 overall and 1-0 in the G-MAC while the Scots fall to 4-7 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

Ohio Valley took a 6-2 lead less than two minutes into the game, but it was quickly erased by a jump shot in the paint from Jennifer Walker-Crawford and a burst of seven points from Brittany Wells.

The Panthers slowly extending their lead in the second quarter, with Walker-Crawford contributing a pair of layups in the closing minutes.  During Kentucky Wesleyan's final possession of the half, Shayla Wright drained a shot from behind the arc with help from Jasmine Shelt to take a 37-27 lead to halftime.  Strong defense in the second quarter held the Scots to just nine points.

To open the second half, the Panthers utilized an 11-5 run to take a 52-39 lead.  Sydney Morabito forced a turnover and made a long pass to Wells who made the jumper.  Just two minutes later, a pair of free throws from Walker-Crawford would put the Panthers ahead by 15.

Shayla Wright executed a four-point play in the fourth quarter after being fouled on a jump shot.  Both teams scored 15 points in the final frame, allowing Kentucky Wesleyan to hold on for the 73-60 win.

The Panther bench outscored the Scots 28-3 and held a slim advantage in points off turnovers, 11-10.

Wells led all scorers with 22 points and was four-for-seven from beyond the arc.  This marks the eighth game of the season that the reigning G-MAC Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week has scored at least 21 points.

Shayla Wright finished with 16 points while dishing out two assists.  Walker-Crawford scored 15 points while grabbing three rebounds.  Emma Wolfe led Kentucky Wesleyan with three steals.
