OWENSBORO, Ky. – Kentucky Wesleyan won its eighth straight game after taking care of Illinois Springfield 75-66 on Monday afternoon at the Sportscenter, in the final game of the Fairfield Inn Christmas Classic. The Panthers posted a solid outing where they forced 24 turnovers and out-scored the Prairie Stars 43-19 in the second and third quarters of play.
The Panthers are now 8-1 on the year, and have now tied the longest winning streak in KWC women's hoops history from the past 25 years. The 1991-92 women also won eight consecutive games.
Kentucky Wesleyan struggled to get things going in the opening minutes, as UIS held an eight point advantage at 20-12 in the first quarter. The Panthers trailed 23-18 after the first frame.
The Panthers produced a fantastic second quarter, where they out-scored the Prairie Stars 23-12.
KWC's first lead of the contest came in the first two minutes of the second, after the Panthers soared on a 10-2 run for a 28-25 lead.
Illinois Springfield led 35-31 with three minutes left before halftime, but the Panthers ended the quarter on a 10-0 run to give KWC a 41-35 lead at the break.
The game and momentum shifted in the third quarter once KWC went on an 18-0 run and pushed the lead open to 59-43. Brittany Wells scored eight points in the run that ultimately put the game away for the Panthers.
Kentucky Wesleyan's largest lead of the afternoon was 23 after the Panthers led 68-45 in the fourth quarter.
Brittany Wells dropped 26 points on 11-20 shooting from the field. She also compiled seven rebounds, three assists, and three steals in the win.
Wells is second in the conference in scoring with 21.2 points per contest.
Senior's Sydney Morabito and Erin Dorn each tallied nine and eight points respectively. Dorn played her first game since injuring her knee back in the Pops Duncan Classic in November.
Jennifer Walker-Crawford and Addie Reimbold each scored seven points and recorded four rebounds apiece, while Shayla Wright connected on eight points.
Bria Wright collected six assists and six rebounds, both team-highs in the win. Freshman Jasmine Shelt scored six points and brought in four rebounds.
The Panthers as a team shot 49 percent from the field, and shot 69 percent from the free throw line.Â
KWC also added 44 points inside the paint along with forcing 24 turnovers. Kentucky Wesleyan converted 22 points off of turnovers on Monday afternoon.
Kentucky Wesleyan will head into Christmas break with an 8-1 record, and will next play Dec. 31 against Asbury University at 1 pm at the Sportscenter.
