Looking to knock off G-MAC opponent Trevecca Nazarene after falling to the Trojans earlier in the season, the Kentucky Wesleyan women's basketball team came up short again, losing 65-62 Saturday afternoon in Nashville, Tenn. The Panthers are 14-6 overall and 9-2 in league play.
Senior
Kourtney Rhoads opened the scoring by knocking down a jumper. The Trojans countered with a three pointer.
The score remained within three before Trevecca Nazarene went on a 6-0 run to go ahead 19-13 with 9:02 to go before halftime.
KWC pulled within two when senior
Karly Rhoads connected on two free throw attempts with 7:54 on the clock to make it a 19-17 game.
Trevecca Nazarene went back ahead by six with 6:40 on the clock after Sarah Raby hit a jumper.
Kourtney Rhoads tied the game at 24 apiece after making a jumper and senior
Shelbi Tyra put the Panthers ahead 26-24 on a jumper at the 4:04 mark.
KWC took its largest lead of the first half at the 1:06 mark after senior
T'Essence Phelps made a layup to give the Panthers the 33-28 advantage. The Trojans scored the next five points to tie the game at 33 all with 14 seconds on the clock. Freshman
Asia Coates connected on a jumper with seven seconds on the clock to put the halftime score at 35-33.
KWC shot 38 percent from the field in the first half of action and 67 percent from the free throw line. Trevecca Nazarene connected on 39 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes of play, 33 percent from beyond the arch and 90 percent from the stripe.
Neither team was able to score during the first minute and a half of the second half of play.
Kourtney Rhoads ended the drought by hitting a jumper.
Junior
Jordanne Gambill made it a 42-37 game after hitting a three pointer with 17:11 remaining in the game.
The Trojans went on a 10-0 run midway through the second half to go ahead 54-46 with 8:46 to go in the game. Trevecca Nazarene went ahead 56-47 at the 6:35 mark, but KWC scored the next eight points over the next three minutes of play to put the score at 56-55.
The Trojans made it a 61-55 game with just under two minutes to play. KWC scored five straight points to put the score at 61-60 with 29 second remaining in the game. Christina Curtner hit two free throw shots to go ahead 63-60 with 22 seconds on the clock. Gambill pulled the Panthers within one with eight seconds to go in the game. After Paige Baugher made two free throw attempts, KWC had a chance to tie the game with one last shot, but the Panthers three point attempt was blocked.
KWC ended the game shooting 34 percent from the field, 39 percent from beyond the arch and 68 percent from the free throw line. Trevecca Nazarene knocked down 35 percent of its shots from the floor, 35 percent from three point range and 81 percent from the stripe.
Kourtney Rhoads had a team best 20 points, while Phelps collected 15 rebounds.
Karly Rhoads led the squad with four assists and Coates had two blocked shots.
The Panthers return to action on Thursday, February 13, hosting conference opponent Cedarville at 5:30 p.m.
