KWC women’s basketball succumbs to Davis & Elkins 99-94 in two overtimes

The Kentucky Wesleyan women's basketball team fell 99-94 in two overtimes to G-MAC opponent Davis & Elkins Thursday night in Elkins, W.Va. The Panthers are 15-8 overall and 9-4 in league play.

KWC jumped ahead 6-2 to start the game, with four of those points coming from senior T'Essence Phelps. The Senators pulled within two at the 17:50 mark following two made free throw attempts to make it a 6-4 game.

The two teams exchanged baskets, before Stephanie Wooten gave Davis & Elkins its first lead of the game after connecting on a three point attempt. Senior Shelbi Tyra scored the next four points to give KWC the 12-9 advantage with 13:43 remaining in the first half of play. The Senators hit another three pointer on the ensuing possession to tie the game at 12 apiece.

Davis & Elkins built a 21-14 lead with 10:42 remaining before the break. The Panthers fought back with a 10-0 run to go ahead 30-28 with just under six minutes to go in the opening half of play. Sophomore Jade Mills-Harris made two free throw attempts to score the final points of the run for KWC.

The Senators scored the next four points to pull back ahead at 32-30 with 4:43 on the clock in the opening 20 minutes of play.

Neither team went ahead by more than two points the remainder of the opening half, as freshman Jennifer Walker-Crawford scored the final two points of the half to put the score at 40-38 heading into the break.

KWC shot 41 percent from the field and 93 percent from the free throw line in the first twenty minutes of play. Davis & Elkins made 42 percent of its shots from the field, 80 percent from the stripe and 44 percent from beyond the arch in the first half.

The Panthers began the second half of play with a 5-0 run, including a layup and made free throw attempt by Phelps.

Senior Karly Rhoads made it a 52-46 game after making a layup and two free throws with 14:28 on the clock.

KWC built a 10 point advantage before the Senators used a 9-0 run to pull within one of the Panthers, at 76-75 with 8:26 to go in the game.

The Panthers made four-of-six free throw attempts to close out its scoring in the second half of play while Davis & Elkins made a three and a layup to put the score at 80-80 following 40 minutes of play.

Karly Rhoads connected on a layup and Walker-Crawford went two-for-two from the free throw line, as KWC went ahead 84-80 to start the first overtime.

Freshman Erin Dorn scored the final bucket of the first overtime with 3:42 on the clock to put the score at 88-88.

The Senators scored the first basket of the second overtime, but KWC scored the next four points to make it a 92-90 game with 4:30 remaining in play.

Davis & Elkins went on a 5-0 run to go ahead 95-92 with just under four minutes to go in the second overtime.

Phelps hit two free throw attempts before the Senators made four straight free-throws to take the game 99-94.

KWC finished the game shooting 42 percent from the field and 85 percent from the free throw line, while only going one-for-12 from beyond the arch. The Senators connected on 43 percent of its shots from the field, 83 percent from the stripe and 28 percent from beyond the arch.

Karly Rhoads finished the game with 27 points and two steals, while Phelps had 15 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Kourtney Rhoads had two blocked shots and two assists. Dorn also had two assists.

The Panthers return to action on Saturday, February 22 against conference opponent Alderson Broaddus at 1:00 p.m. CT in Philippi, W.Va.
