Playing in its first home game of 2014 the Kentucky Wesleyan women's basketball team beat G-MAC foe Davis & Elkins handily 112-75 on Thursday evening. The Panthers recorded the fifth most points in a game in program history with the 112 points to improve to 10-4 on the season, while remaining perfect in conference play at 5-0.
The Senators opened the game scoring the first 10 points, before senior
Karly Rhoads knocked down a jumper at the 17:21 mark to end the D&E run.
KWC scored the next six points following
Karly Rhoads basket to make it a 10-8 with 15:49 remaining before the intermission. The Senators ended the Panthers run on the ensuing possession with a jumper.
D&E built a six point advantage before the Panthers went on a 13-0 run to build a 22-15 advantage with 10:30 on the clock. The Senators went 1-for-2 from the free throw line to end the Panthers run.
Senior
T'Essence Phelps gave KWC its first double digit lead following a layup to make it a 26-16 game with 9:05 on the clock.
The two teams exchanged baskets before the Panthers used a 12-0 run to go up 40-20 with 5:12 remaining before the break. Stephanie Wooten snapped the KWC run on the following possession.
Junior
Jordanne Gambill converted on two free throw attempts with 1:51 on the clock to give the Panthers its largest lead of the opening half at 26 points, with the score at 53-27.
KWC went into halftime leading 55-29 after shooting 56 percent from the field, 63 percent from three point range and 88 percent from the free throw line. D&E ended the first half of action shooting 35 percent from the floor and 25 percent from beyond the arch, while going 5-for-8 from the free throw line.
The Panthers pushed their lead to 31 points after scoring the first five points in the opening minute of the second half to put the score at 60-29.
D&E scored the next four points to cut KWC's lead to 27 with 18:13 remaining in the game and pulled within 21 points at the 16:06 mark after a three point basket to put the score at 62-41.
Sophomore
Jade Mills-Harris connected on a three with 10:49 to go in the game to make it an 82-49 game.
Senior
Shelbi Tyra made a layup at the 9:12 mark to put KWC ahead 86-51. The Senators scored the next six points to pull within 29 points. Tyra knocked down two free throws to end the D&E run.
D&E hit two free throw attempts with just over seven minutes remaining to put the score at 88-62.
Freshman
Sydney Morabito got on the board by hitting a three pointer with 4:21 on the clock to make it a 103-65 game.
KWC took its largest lead of the game with under a minute of play as Mills-Harris made a layup giving the Panthers the 112-71 advantage.
On the evening KWC shot 59 percent from the floor, 59 percent from three point range and 82 percent from the line. D&E ended the game shooting 33 percent from the floor, 26 percent from beyond the arch and 81 percent from the free throw line.
Karly Rhoads collected a career best 32 points in the win and the 12th most points scored in a single game. She also recorded four steals along with Mills-Harris. In the win Mills-Harris posted a team high five assists.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, January 11 at home against G-MAC opponent Alderson Broaddus at 1 p.m.
